The East Coast National Scenic Area was approved by the EXECUTIVE YUAN in September 1987 as the country's second national scenic area. Rich in sightseeing resources, it is the only scenic area in Taiwan combining mountains, ocean, and islands.

The East Coast National Scenic Area is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the east and the Coast Range on the west. The many sightseeing attractions along the Hualien section of the scenic area include Hualien Harbor, Lake Cising (Seven Stars), Fanshuliao, the Guangfu Sugar Refinery, and Shihtiping Visitor Center. The Taitung section of the scenic area includes Eight Immortals Cave, the Stone Umbrella, Wushihbi, Sansiantai, Taiyuan Valley, Donghe Bridge, Shueiwangshangliou, Shanyuan Swimming Beach, and Little Yeliou.
