Located in Changhua County, Lugang is one of Taiwan's most historic
and cultural-endowed towns. Founded in the 1700's, Lugang was once one of
the island's busiest ports. Commerce throve throughout the 1700's and 1800's.
Along with Tainan and Manka (Mengjia, today's Wanhua District of Taipei), Lugang
was then considered one of Taiwan's three largest cities, which gave rise
to the saying "One is Tainan, two is Lugang, and three is Manka (Mengjia)." |
|
Changhua County has more well-preserved historic sites than any
other county in Taiwan. The Matsu Temple in Lugang is one of county's
most famous temples. Built more than 300 years ago, the Matsu Temple is
the sole temple containing an original image of Meijhou Matsu. Believers
come here from throughout Taiwan to light incense and pray to Matsu. Worshippers
are particularly numerous from the first to the third lunar month, and
the temple is frequently packed tight with people during this period.
The Meijhou Matsu in the Lugang Matsu Temple is thought to possess
awesome spiritual powers. In addition to the great number of worshippers,
the temple is also well known for its grand scale and hoary age.
