Spot description–Alishan Jhaoping Station

This camera is located at the third guest house on Alishan. The picture shows Jhaoping Station on Alishan.

Jhaoping Station was originally the old railway station on Alishan. The Alishan Forest Railway splits into two branches as it passes through the recreation area, and both branches start at Jhaoping. Jhaoping was once a logging village, but the growing number of visitors eventually led to the construction of numerous hotels and shops. Jhaoping was thus the earliest travel destination within the Alishan Forest Recreation Area. Jhaoping Station was originally known as "Alishan Station," but it was renamed Jhaoping Station after the construction of the new Alishan Station farther down the hill.

Two old locomotives that once pulled trains along the forest railway are on display here. These coal-fired locomotives were originally used to transport lumber out of the mountains, and also carried countless early tourists to Alishan. Now retired, they look like they are still ready to go.
