Spot description - Siaofongkou in Mt. Hehuan

This camera is located at the Hehuanshan Management Station. Starting on the right side, the picture shows the Hehuanshan Management Station and parking lot. The Siaofongkou area contains many high mountain plants.

The Hehuanshan area is rich in spectacular scenery. The Hehuanshan Management Station is located at Siaofongkou, which is at the 36.6 kilometer mark on Taiwan Route 14. It is approximately 37 kilometers from Wushe, and 81 kilometers from the entrance to Taroko Gorge. The area is seldom closed for snow, and there is plenty of parking space. The management station provides visitor services and performs administrative tasks. After 16 years of management, the eastern section of the Cross-Island Highway has a full set of services and facilities. The management station has now turned its attention towards improving service and facilities in the western section since 2001.

Situated in a narrow gap between the headwaters of the Dajia River and Liwu Stream, Siaofongkou gets its name from its strong winds and much mist ("Siaofongkou" = "little wind gap"). The nearby mountainsides are covered with forests of Taiwan fir and hemlock interspersed with dense thickets of arrow bamboo. The mists and clouds that commonly engulf this area make Siaofongkou a good spot from which to view the "cloud sea" and sunrise over Mt. Cilai.
