The Japanese authorities rearranged Taichung's streets after taking
control of Taiwan. Taichung Park was developed at its current location
in 1903, and thus has a century of history. While the park has been upgraded
over the years, and no longer looks the way it once did, the old pavilion
in Sun Moon Lake still preserves its classical style. Built in 1908, the
Pavilion in the Lake is the park's best-known structure. Visitors can
rent rowboats for a tour around the lake. The trees in the park are tall
and luxuriant, and bright flowers vie for attention. Facilities include
a historic moon pavilion and cannon platform, as well as an outdoors music
stage, children's playground, and tennis courts. These facilities are
open to the public for recreation and reflection on the past.
